Insulated tumblers have been all the rage the last few years, and with good reason – they keep your drinks at a steady temperature for hours!

I do my best to keep all of my things in the best condition possible. Respect, through care and maintenance, equals equipment that serves me for a long time.

One of the most popular tumbler manufacturers, Yeti, states their cups are so durable that they’re dishwasher safe. (Click here for Yeti’s statement on dishwashers.)

However, I don’t think anyone will argue with me when I propose that their usable life and peak performance can be extended by omitting them from the extreme heat of a dishwasher.

When things are heated up, they expand; so the seams between the outer cup and the bottom will expand too – ever had a travel mug go through the dishwasher only to notice water trapped INSIDE the walls of the cup the next time you used it? Good luck drying that out!

How I keep my tumbler lookin’ fancy:

Based on the intention of keeping these cups for a long, long, time, I choose to hand wash our tumblers and set them into the drying rack to air dry.

Or at least I used to.

What was the result of air drying?

Not very attractive huh?

I may be alone in this, but honestly, the water spots were taking away from the joy of the tumbler. Sure, it doesn’t affect performance in the slightest, but every time I lifted it to drink I noticed them and thought about how much I didn’t like seeing the spots.

Why not just rub them off?

Once the water has dried it doesn’t work to just rub them off, you have to rewash the cup.

The final fix:

What I do now is towel dry the cups before the water evaporates.

Afterwards, they look amazing. They feel amazing. And they add value to my life.
